Can’t Stay Mad at Loki

A question I’ve been hearing quite often in Marvel-related discussions is, “How can people love Loki so much after the events of The Avengers?” As the release of Thor: The Dark World drew near, the question then became, “How are we as an audience supposed to accept a genocidal villain like Loki as a secondary protagonist? How will the writers elicit any sympathy out of us?”
It’s an interesting point, and I’m grateful that the writers did not shy away from tackling it (quite successfully too), especially when they could have taken the much easier and equally successful route of relying simply on Loki’s built-in fanbase and Tom Hiddleston’s natural onscreen charisma.
